Snapchat tests user tagging; Instagram Shopping in Germany; YouTube launches paid music service

Dear Readers,

Hardly any news concerned the world during this week as much as the worldwide data scandal surrounding the social media giant Facebook. After the misuse of user data by Cambridge Analytica became public, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg issued his first official statement regarding these events yesterday. He acknowledged (some) mistakes, announced changes and spoke about how the company experienced a “breach of trust” – between Facebook, Kogan and Cambridge Analytica, but especially between the user and Facebook.

And exactly this “breach of trust” could become dangerous for the platform – now the first protests are heard on the net with #deletefacebook.

So now, all eyes are on Facebook. We will look very closely too – yet, we will also go a little further to present you more Social Web News of the week.

Snapchat: Soon you can tag people in Snaps

Generally not a world novelty, with Snapchat it is: The tagging of users. What is already common on Facebook and Co. might now also be available on Snapchat – in the hope of bringing the platform back on track, according to
The tags allow Snapchat users to expand their network and groups with others. But above all, for influencers and enterprises this update offers completely new marketing possibilities – because influencers can share a company’s product by photo, and tag the company accordingly.
The update is currently still in a test phase. Whether and when the tagging feature is available is unknown.

Instagram Shopping: Now also available in Germany

With Instagram Shopping, the platform introduced a function in 2017 that can be used to link articles to an online shop. An exciting opportunity for companies to inform their own target group and followers directly on Instagram about (the latest) products.

And now German companies or influencers – who have converted their account into an Instagram company profile – can also use Instagram Shopping. The prerequisite is a company profile and a product catalogue that is linked to a Facebook shop.
Users recognize shopping articles by a shopping bag symbol. In addition, the products shown in the picture are marked with prices. With a click, users receive further information about the product and can initiate the purchase process.

YouTube: YouTube: Launch of a paid music-streaming service

Thousands of people listen to music on YouTube and make the platform their primary source for music content. This in turn has a negative effect on the artists – because the listener lacks the incentive to buy the music.

Now YouTube wants to counteract. As YouTube music chief Lyor Cohen told Bloomberg, the video streaming platform will take certain measures to direct users to one of its paid music streaming services. And this measure is called: advertising!
The increasing number of ads during the streaming of music should “frustrate” users to such an extent that they will choose the paid music-streaming service by YouTube instead. A phenomenon that Spotify has been successfully using for years.

YouTube itself explained: “Our top priority at YouTube is to deliver a great user experience, and that includes ensuring users do not encounter excessive ad loads. For a specific subset of users who use YouTube like a paid music service today — and would benefit most from additional features — we may show more ads or promotional prompts to upsell to our paid service.”
