YouTube presents new logo
Everybody knows YouTube. And everybody knows the YouTube Logo. That famous logo with the red play button which highlights the word “tube”.
But since today, exactly this legendary logo presents itself visibly changed – as YouTube started its biggest re-design since its foundation 12 years ago. The red YouTube icon has been removed from the brand name and placed as a separate image at the beginning of the logo.
Thereby, YouTube manages the leap to a more flexible overall design. But what does “flexible” mean?
„When room is limited (say on a smartphone) you can use the brightened up Icon as an abbreviated Logo, which will be seen more easily and read more clearly. You’ll see the new Logo and Icon roll out across mobile and desktop today, and across all our other apps and services soon.”, says Youtube product manager Neal Mohan in an official blog post.
YouTube app with many new features
Clearly, the focus of the re-design is on “mobile”. And therefore, it´s no surprise that many new features are focused on the mobile YouTube app, for example:
- New design: To shift more attention to the videos, the header was designed in white.In addition, the navigation was placed at the end of the app – which makes it for users easier to use with their thumbs.
- Optimal video adaptation: Black bars on the sides of the videos … Bye Bye. YouTube modifies the player to ensure that it adapts its shape optimally to the format of the respective video, which is played – whether its horizontal, vertical or a square format.
- Motion control: Beginning of the year, YouTube has already introduced the feature which allows users to fast forward or rewind within a video by double-tapping on the left or right side. “We already see billions of double taps per day.”, says Mohan. And right now, YouTube even experiments with a feature, that allows users to switch between videos by simply swiping right or left.
- Playback up to speed: Until now, it was only possible on desktop to control the playback speed of a video. Yet, due to the relaunch, it was now also introduced for the mobile version.
Also new: Suggested videos will also be displayed even when a video is running in full screen mode.
But for the desktop design, YouTube had another ace up its sleeve. The newly introduced “dark theme”. Means: The background turns dark when playing a video, which offers a more “cinematic look”, so Neal Mohan.
Dot-gruppe responds quickly to the YouTube relaunch
As a video marketing specialist, the dot group is constantly in motion and responded in time to the updates from YouTube. Already during the trial phase of individual designs and features, the dot-gruppe adjusted the YouTube accounts of their partners accordingly – to keep them and their video content in the right light, the spotlight.
